Research at CHMS
On July 1, 1993, the faculty of the Division of Materials Science and Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Aeronautical, and Materials Engineering opted to merge with the faculty in Chemical Engineering to form a new Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. The primary reason for the merger was the recognition that the new directions in teaching and research
at the interfaces of chemical and materials sciences require a coordinated, multidisciplinary effort utilizing faculty expertise from both disciplines. |
| Chemical Engineering is concerned with the application of chemistry and engineering principles (e.g., scale-up, control and optimization) in the design of industrial processes that change the state, chemical composition, and microstructure of materials for the production of useful products in diverse industries such as petroleum, food, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and semiconductors. |
| Materials Science and Engineering is concerned with the synthesis, processing, characterization, and structure/property relations of new and existing materials. |

| | Both disciplines are concerned with integrating product and process design with the environment. The interdisciplinary activities of the department faculty have received strong external funding in materials synthesis and processing, biochemical/biomaterials, including polymers. There is a fast-gathering momentum in nanophases (triggered primarily by the recruitment of Professor Alexandra Navrotsky in 1997) and a strong effort to build
a MRSEC-NSF Center at UC Davis. Several department faculty are already part of MRSEC (in collaboration with Stanford and IBM) which is now in its second phase. |
