Nanoporous Membranes for Protein Separation
Mixture of BHb and BSA at pI of BSASurface modification of nanopores membranes with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) offers an opportunity to make tailor-made nanoporous membranes for specific separations. Electroless gold deposition followed by formation of SAMs of functionalized alkanethiols are being used by us to modify surface properties of polycarbonate track-etched filtration membranes to prepare pH- and electrical potential-responsive, ion selective membranes. The flux of proteins across such membranes can be varied drastically with pH, voltage and ionic strength. We showed gating type behavior for albumin and hemoglobin transport through surface-modified nanopores. These concepts of surface modification should be applicable to porous materials used for chromatographic separations.
