Nanoparticles/Polymer Structures
We have studied surface template induced, nanoparticle nucleation inside ultrathin films. Nanoparticles in organized molecular films may have applications in nanofabrication, in catalysis, electrodic reactions and in storage and display media. The goal of the work is to understand the role of the properties of the multilayer film in nucleating specific nanoparticles or fabricating nanostructures. We have been able to make vast magnetic monolayers of magnetic nanoparticles using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. We are also studying bulk nanoparticle/polymer nanocomposites where the size, size distribution, purity and density of the nanoparticles in the bulk polymer are controlled. Such nanocomposites have improved bulk properties and can be used for structural materials, bottles and packaging.
