The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (CHMS) at the University of California, Davis,
offers graduate study leading to both Ph.D. and M.S. degrees, although a strong preference is given to applicants
for our doctoral programs.
The department offers two distinct degree programs, in chemical engineering, and materials science and engineering,
with a wide choice of research projects. Joint research within the department and with faculty in other departments
on the Davis campus is encouraged. Members of our chemical engineering faculty have interests in biotechnology
and biochemical engineering, biomolecular and biomedical engineering, colloid and surface science, environmental science,
microfluidics, transport phenomena, separation processes, fluid mechanics and rheology, catalysis, process design and control,
materials processing, nanotechnology, polymers, organic solar cells, thin films, thermodynamics, and theory and modeling.
Among the interest of materials science faculty are processing of advanced materials, materials for biotechnology and
medicine, materials for energy, biomaterials, microstructural characterization, thermochemistry, properties of glasses
and ceramics, properties and processing of nanomaterials, fracture and fatigue of solids, superplasticity in metals and
ceramics, high-temperature materials synthesis, interface reactions, materials testing and strength, semiconduction, optical and
electronic/ionic and magnetic materials, and advanced coating systems. We believe that this breadth of activity
will enable you to find the best match between your research interests and those of our faculty.

To apply for graduate school, you need to submit online the following: Graduate Application including Statement of
Purpose; Personal Statement; GRE Scores; TOEFL Scores (if applicable); three Letters of Recommendation;
Internal Fellowship Application; Application Fee - $60 (domestic)/ $80 (international). Your College Transcript(s)
should be mailed.
Additional and supplemental information will not be accepted. Please include all pertinent information in the online
Graduate Application.
Your application is not complete until all of the above items are received. ALL parts must be received by the deadline in
order to be considered complete. NO EXCEPTIONS. These materials will be reviewed by the Chemical Engineering and
Materials Science Admissions Committee and the Office of Graduate Studies, after which the student will be notified of
their decision.
We have currently closed our online application for Fall 2008. It will reopen in October 2008 for Fall 2009 applications.
